Ask in win98 networking and other newgroups but not many there anymore.
Here's the problem, comments and question...

Recently networked two 98se's and 1 XP system.
Here's the problem and not sure if networking is problem or not but no one
else, in other newsgroups(office, word.newusers), seems to know.
I have two HP722c printers. One connected to the XP and one to a 98se system
that have worked fine. The other 98se does not have a printer thus the
reason for networking plus file sharing a plus.
Since networking, the 98se printer keeps locking up Word(only) when I try to
print an already created Word .doc. It even does it when I click File/page
setup. The top bar and the icon in task bar starts flashing. The only way
out is to Ctrl, Alt, Delete and a lighter colored icon of the file is left
in the folder the original file is in. noticed that even another
"normal.doc" is created.
If I create a "new" .doc everything works fine.

Here's what I've done:
1. Uninstalled and reinstalled print driver on 98se (720c).
2. Set controls to print directly to printer, bypassing spooling(one
suggestion).
3. Unshared printers(another suggestion).

The only other thing I can come up with is the print driver(cd) that
originally came with the printer is for a 720c which loads fine on the 98se
system. The XP system loads it own 722c driver and I'm wondering if this is
causing a conflict?
This may just be a coincidence but wondering if this may be the REAL
problem, networking to two system with different print drivers?

thanks,
L.

The 98se that has a 722c attached. remote

I can print from the 98se that does not have a printer to the one that does
with no problem.

Guess I could sign of LAN, uninstall and reinstall 720c driver and see what
happens.?.

Sometimes the flashing title bar indicates a dialogue box has tried to show
itself, but because of a flaw in Office 2000 it doesnt come to the top.
Clicking the Word program bar in the start bar twice (ie it minimises then
maximises) will usually bring the dialogue box to the top.
I believe installing the latest service packs for Office 2000 fixes this
issue.

When it "freezes" do you lose use of the mouse and keyboard? Can you click on
the "windows" key or CNTRL-ESC and get activity. If "yes" then it isnt
frozen, just waiting for some input, or else one program has stopped
responding. Have you tried clicking on the flashing icon in the task bar as
previously suggested.

Also, if it is only happening in Word then I would suspect that Word /
Office is the culprit. First step would be to delete all copies of normal.dot
on the PC.

Failing that uninstall Office, then manually delete its folder and also go
to prog's -> common files and delete the Office folders there. Come to think
of it MS has an Office removal tool which should do this stuff - have a look
on their web site.

Let me get it straight:
- you create new Word document, print it, and save/close;
- you open this file again and any thing you do related to Normal.dot leads
to flashing Word bars and lockup;
- you press CAD, kill Word, and hidden file is left in the folder where the
original file is and another Normal.dot file is created next time.

You can open Microsoft Word in Office Safe Mode by pressing CTRL while you
start the program or by using the /safe or /a option (depends on version).

Seek in microsoft.public.word.* newsgroups.

all correct except I haven't tried opening Word in Safe Mode to see what
happens.
Will give that a shot.

Don't lose mouse/keyboard so when I refer to lock-up. I'm reffering to the
program Word, not entire system.
Will try clicking on flashing icon and see what happens.
I did delete Normal.doc's but still locks up.

I was thinking, as a last resort, of uninstalling and reinstalling Office2k.
Apparently fix and repair won't do the trick.
