Printer on PC is denied access from Mac

Dell PC + XP Home SP2 and Dell and HP printers.
Apple Mac iBook G4 + OS X 10.3.7 with Airport.
On router in same network.

Each can see the other's files (mostly - there are oddities I don't yet
understand). The Mac can see the Dell's printer. But when I print to it it
churns away for a bit then says 'Connection failed with
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED'.

I'n not a very technical person, but the book 'MS Windows XP Inside Out De
Luxe' on p. 1032 seemed to me to be saying that I needed to
1) install print services for UNIX,
2) set the TCP/IP Print Server service to automatic, and
3) set up an LPR port for the printer.

I did the above (and added a second Dell printer for step 3) but got the
same message when I tried to print to it from the Mac.

When setting up the LPR port I entered the network name of the Dell in the
box for 'Name or address of server providing lpd' and the share name of the
printer in the box for 'Name of printer or print queue on that server'. Was
that right? Or perhaps I've got all this entirely wrong?

I would be grateful for any suggestions what to do next.

I don't know how it's happened, but now My Network Places in the PC does not
show the printer share names (two printers are shared, one as originally
installed and one modified as described in my original post) but instead
shows 'Printers and Faxes'. If you click on it it shows all the printers and
faxes on the PC, not just the shared ones.

And from the Mac I can no longer see any printers on the PC.
