Printer loses default settings

Using Windows XP and HP printer. Whenever I turn the computer off and then
turn it on again, I have to reset my default printer. The default settings
are lost when the computer is turned off. This is a pain. How can I get the
default printer to retain its settings?
 
Theres an option in the printer settings to remember them, cannot remember
how to get into it though sorry!

Where are you resetting your default printer ?
