Printer disappears when default is set to a network printer

If I set to the default printer to a network-connected printer, then I can't print from access 2003 anymore. Moving the mouse over the print icon displays (no printer), and File -> print doesn't bring up the print options screen.
Setting the default printer to a locally installed printer allows me to choose from the network printers once the print options screen is brought up.

Word and Excel both work fine if a network printer is selected as the default.
Other PC's on the network do not have this problem, and all of them have been cloned from the same base image.

Why is this happening?

You probably have a corrupt printer (file). Remember, a printer on a PC is
not a physical machine. It is a device. Delete all your printers and add
(reinstall) them back.
