Printer begins printing, then stops

I have a new XP, and an older HP970Cse printer.
Troubleshooter sent me here for help.

printer shows error message:"printing-error" , that's it.

followed all the different Troubleshooter suggestions including uninstalling
printer and reinstalling.

One item says to open device manager and "right click" on Ports, but when I
open device manager, there are no "Ports" showing (Yes, I opened the hidden
parts too).

I also tried the process through the command prompt. you are to type "con
copy lpt1" or con copy USB001 (in my case the port shows Virtual Port:
"USB001").

Don't know what that means.
When I do the ECHO HELLO thingy, it tells me that there is nothing there.

Help please.

As I understand this printer is both USB and parallel port capable. In
addition, the original drivers were likely for win2K and win 9x.
These drivers may not install correctly. In addition, if you have a VIA
chipset motherboard, you may have to reinstall the support drivers for the
chipset.

Using the parallel port might be useful from a troubleshooting standpoint.
Uninstalling the drivers, disconnecting the printer, and uninstalling the
USB port and controller, then doing a reboot from power off may help. HP
(web site) also generally has a cleanup or uninstall utility available that
may help cleanup printer related registry entries. I would suggest obtaining
the latest winXP drivers from HP and using them.
