Printed to shared printer on Windows 98 machine

I have two computers, one is running Windows 2000 and the
other is running Windows 98. They are networked using a
linksys router and share a broadband connection. The
Windows 2000 machine was able to access shared directories
as well as a shared printer without a problem. After
being taken in to corporate offices and logging into the
domain I cannot access my share's on the Windows 98
machine or the shared printer, the most important issue.
The user usually logs in with their "domain" account, not
to the local PC. So...I found a knowledge base article
regarding cached credentials and having to provide the
credentials again when mapping a network drive to a
share. i.e. click use different username when mapping the
drive and enter domain\username and then the password.
This worked fine for access the file shares. I however
still cannot print.

The printer status shows up as printer not available. If
i search for the computer using the IP address or browse
to it on the network and try to double click it to see
shares, I get the following message. Access Denied no
servers avaialable to service the logon request.

I can print to the printer no problem from the windows 98
machine. I do not have a password set on the printer
share. HELP???

Same as my problem, except the 2000 computer is connected through a
wireless card to the linksys.

Me either, except there was no change except for a Windows update.

I can see the printers in My Network Places , but when I try to connect
to them, "Could not connect to the printer. You either entered a printer
name that is incorrect, or the requested printer is no longer connected
to the server". The other laptop running XP can still print through the
98 machine.

Sorry I cannot help, but I thought I would share my similar problem in
case it shed any light.

Remember that the people posting help on these newsgroups do so out the
goodness of their hearts - no one gets paid to do this.

About your problem, I'm not sure I have an answer, but here's something to
try.

Open a Command Prompt window on the Windows 2000 computer
key the command

net use \\Windows98ComputerName\ipc$

then try to connect to the printer.

Windows 98 doesn't have a "security system" like Windows 2000, XP etc., but
one normally logs on to Windows 98 with a username and password, even if
the logon is automatic.

If the above command doesn't help, try this one:

net use \\Windows98ComputerName\ipc$ password /user:username

where username and password correspond to a user name that logs on to the
Windows 98 computer.

If the net use command gives an error, what exactly is the text of the error
message?

The second command you gave me worked it said command
completed sucessfully. The printer then shows ready, but
when she tries a test print it give the following message
unable to create a print job.

I downloaded new drivers and installed them, still got the
same result on the test print.

Thanks for your help, I did not mean to presume upon your
kindness, I was not using the forum correctly and so could
not find the responses to my post. I get it now though.

I want to make sure I understand the situation correctly. The computer that
you want to print from is the Windows 2000 computer, which is a member of
your company's domain. The computer with the printer is a Windows 98
computer. Is this correct?

1. can you now access shared folders on the Windows 98 computer?
2. the command has to be entered each time a user logs on at the Windows
2000 computer. If you don't want to have to key the command after each
logon, add " /persistent:yes" to the end of the command
e.g. net use \\Windows98ComputerName\ipc$ password /user:username
/persistent:yes
3. Did you add the printer on the Windows 2000 computer as a Network Printer
or as a Local Printer? If you added it as a Network Printer, there may be
an issue with the printer driver. See
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm and
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterNoPP.htm.

If there's still no success, please state the make and model of printer.
