Print services for Mac on Win2K3 server just don't work...

- Windows 2003 server has printer installed and working fine from itself and
other Windows machines.
- Print services for Mac are installed
- Printer is shared
- Mac running OS9 had printer driver installed and presents two icons for
the printer in the chooser. One for local printing and one for network
printing.
- When choosing the icon for network printing, no printers are presented in
the display.
- Mac can access shared files on the Win2K3 server fine.
- Printer works fine when connected directly to Mac.

Why doesn't the Mac see the shared printer? Won't Win2K3 just spool the data
from the Mac to the printer or does it need to interpret a bunch of stuff
for some unknown reason? What good is print services if it doesn't actually
work with any printers?

Printer is an Epson Photo 700.

Hi Phrederick!

First, the Mac Print Services on the server will only work with Postscript
printers. Your Epson Photo 700 is not a Postscript device.

The printer will work when directly connected to the Mac because the Mac
processes all information and then sends that information via serial
connection to the printer. Postscript printers expect to receive Postscript
information and then will process that information themselves.

When Macs send information over the network, they're sending Postscript
information. There is no workaround for this.

Hope this helps! bill

So, how does the Photo 700 work when Networks on an Apple network? This does
work and the printer driver provides an icon for this connection.

Hi Phrederick!

After looking at the available software for your printer on Epson's website,
it appears that Epson offers an AT (Appletalk) driver for use only with Axis
1440 print servers. You may have both drivers installed on your Mac, but the
only one that will work for you is the serial driver (used when your printer
is directly connected to the printer). I'm pulling the information from this
page on Epson's site
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&
infoType=Downloads&oid=14405&prodoid=8270

It would be the print server that is accepting the Postscript and
interpreting it for the Photo 700.
