Hello :-)

If you press the "Print Screen" key, that it will take a screen snapshot and
copy it to the clipboard. Is there some option to be set that will also
automatically save the capture to a file without using any 3rd party
freeware/shareware?

Thanks.

NO. But AnalogX has Capture for free which will do it
nicely.

Well, if you don't want to use 3rd party freeware/shareware, then you can
use Microsoft Paint from the Accessories menu, which is built in with
Windows XP

Automatically? Not that I know of. But, depending on what you
want to use the file for, you can run the clipbook viewer (Start
| Run | clipbrd) and save it from there.

Paste it into Paint (under Accesories)
You can save it from there in several different formats (jpg, bmp, gif,
etc.)

Thanks to everyone for replying. :-) Yes, I know, I can then paste the
capture into paintbrush or into whatever else imaging application I use.
Was just wondering if XP had the built in capability of instantly saving
screen shots to files, guess not. But wanted to double check with you folks
first, perhaps I was missing something.

This will save each clipboard item for later use.

No, but if you install the 3rd party freeware program screenprint32,
you will be able to do these things.

Is there a specific reason why you don't want to use 3rd party
software?
