Print Screen of an older program

M

Mint

I would like to do a print screen of some older programs like Quake
and Wolfenstein.

Print screen doesn't work right, even from the diagnostic mode.

Any way to do it?

Thanks.

Try the FRAPS program ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraps

"Screenshots are not watermarked in the free version
but can only be taken in the BMP format."

I tested FRAPS a while back, and it didn't get along
well with my antivirus software. In fact, the machine
froze, due to FRAPS and the AV software, getting into a
fight. I haven't tested it since.

Print Screen can't work as it used to in the DOS systems. You need to
paste the screen capture into some document like Word, Excel or some
photo editors to make them printable.

1) Use Print Screen key;
2) Open Word
3) Paste the clipboard item by using Ctrl+V (Control key + V key
simultaneously)
4) Now print the word document.

Works well, and you can select which part of the screen you want.
(I have a shortcut to it on the WinXP quick launch bar)

I don't use anti-virus, so I will give FRAPS a shot.

Doesn't work.

I forgot to mention in my post, but I am looking for a freeware
solution as well.

I think what the OP means (I reckon he must know how the Window's clipboard
works with the [PrntScr] key) is that his old program won't do screen
capture (PrntScr) when it runs in full-screen mode (though, I may be
wrong).

You could try the DOS utility; CAPTURE.COM that provides DOS with a
functioning [PrntScr] key (i.e. Pressing [PrnScr] copies current screen to
the copy-buffer ready to paste into a program such as mspaint or similar ).
It came included with Microsoft's first incarnation of the WORD
word-processor program for DOS.

Another idea you can try ; you can also start your DOS game, program or
utility, from within the DOSBox shell program - a DOS emulator for versions
of Windows (where no real-DOS exists). Your DOS application will run in
"Windowed-mode" and the normal functionality [PrnScr] should work.

Download Microsoft WORD for DOS which includes the CAPTURE.COM utility.

Another "share-ware" (free-to-try) program along the same lines ;

....And you can obtain DOSBox from ;

Q: I am trying to record a DOS application by switching to it from
Windows, and it seems to be impossible as all I get is some sort of
fuzzy stuff in the playback.
A: CamStudio cannot record your DOS application when it is running in
full screen DOS mode. Try recording your DOS application in windowed
mode. You can make your full-screen DOS application into a window by
pressing CTRL-ESC when you are in DOS mode. This will return you to the
Windows screen. If you look at the task-bar, you will notice a new item
"MS-DOS prompt". By right-clicking on this item, and selecting
Properties, a dialog box will be displayed. Choose the Screen tab and
under Usage, select Window and click "OK". Your DOS screen will now
become a window. You can start recording from here and the output
should be fine.

Full DOS Screen
http://www.softwarelabs.com/help/source/fulldosscreen.html
It is not possible to capture graphics from full DOS screens under
Windows XP. Since this is a limitation of the operating system itself,
no screen capture software can get around it. However Microsoft is
offering a solution with their product "Virtual PC 2007" for free.
