Hello, I need to email someone some screenshoots but the print screen key
doesn't work. Does anyone know why it won't work?

Hi

What you need to do is
-press the print screen button twice and then go to something like MS word
and paste it onto the page.

or

press alt+prt screen and paste it into MS word (this is best option)

Back in the days of DOS, the PrintScrn key used to print the screen. But in
all versions of Windows, this works differently, and the name of the key is
now an anachronism.

To use the key, press it to capture an image of the entire screen, or press
alt-PrintScrn to capture an image of the active window. Either one captures
the image to the Windows clipboard. Once it's in the clipboard you can paste
(Ctrl-V) it into any application that supports graphics (Windows Paint,
other graphics programs, even your favorite word processor). You can edit or
add to the image as you wish, then print it.

This ability to manipulate the image in a program before printing it is an
improvement over the original DOS method of just printing it. But if you'd
like that old facility back, there are several third-party
freeware/shareware programs that can do this, such as PrintKey2000 at

What do you mean, "doesn't work?" You know that the Print Screen button
only copies the screen to the clipboard, right? You have to "paste" the
image to a graphics app such as MS Paint and then save it to a file in
order to attach the pix to an email.

If there really is something wrong with your Print Screen key, download
IrfanView. It's free, does screenshots and a whole lot more, including
viewing just about every graphic file format you're likely to run across.

Print Scrn key "copies" the current Windows screen into the "clipbook". You
need to "paste" this image into a compatible utility like Word or Paint.
Outlook Express or Notepad does not seem to allow you to "paste" this image
directly.

The Print Screen only prints the screen if you are in dos and have a
non-winprinter connected to a parallel port.

Why press it twice? Once is sufficient.

I don't quite understand all the confusion about "Print Screen". I'm
running XP Home and it works just fine, it's just that when you press
the Print Screen button (once) you have to go to "Paint", press
"Paste", there it is; after that you just print from Paint.

Thanks for the tips. My problem was the print screen key worked beautifully
- I pushed it once, and a replica of the screen PRINTED to the default
printer. Now it won't work, I presume b/c we got added to a server upgraded
some things so I guess the guy changed something I didn't want changed.
Screen prints are key for me - do a lot of QB data entry and screen prints
can be invaluable when trying to recreate data in another file, resolve
issues I need to come back to.

BTW, tried the printkey prgram - it's great, just what I needed. Thanks.
