Print layout changed to line demarcation of pages!!

R

Roy Stannard

Hi,

The document I am editing in Print layout has changed. The separate pages
typical of Print layout have disappeared, due to some action on my part, I
guess, and been replaced by lines indicating the separation between the
pages and gaps between the lines being determined only by the amount of
text on the particular page.

I was busily editing tables when this occurred and I have no idea what
happened to produce this effect.

any help much appreciated

Roy

Duh!! Just worked out that clicking on the line brings back the original
Print view.

Just as a matter of interest, what is the purpose of this functionality?

It allows you to read your text continuously, as in Normal view, but in a
more WYSIWYG view. What is not clearly explained anywhere is that the option
to suppress "white space between pages" actually suppresses display of
everything in the header/footer, regardless of where it appears on the page;
this can be disconcerting if you have, say, a letterhead that extends down
the side of the page and it vanishes!

Hide White Space is a useful feature for fast editing of long documents. In
a long complex document, there may be many pages that are only half a page
long: scrolling down that pages is vastly speeded up if the Headers, Footers
and blank white space at the bottom of pages is hidden.

When I try it in Word 2002 the option suppresses everything that is
inline in the header and footer, i.e. everything in the "dashed line
box" in Header and Footer View. However, floating objects that are
anchored in the header or footer are not suppressed. Is Word 2003
different?

Apparently so. I have a fax cover sheet with a text box (with Square
wrapping) extending down the left side of the page, and it disappears when I
Hide White Space.
