print barcodes

J

JIM.H.

Hello,
I have a table which keeps UPC codes, and I need to print
barcodes for them. I have never dealt with barcodes before
so questions:
1. can I do that in Access?
2. we have another system that prints barcodes to a
barcode printer but it prints one barcode at a time, is it
possible that I can have letter size barcode paper and
print them in a standard printer from Access.
Thanks,
Jim.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the reply. Do I have to buy these fonts or they
are free? Also did you succeed to print barcodes on a
letter size paper in a standard printer?
Thanks,
Jim.

Thanks Fred,
I download the free 3 of 9 and created the report. It
seems it is printing some barcodes but my scanner could
not read it. Do the font size, field size in access report
and my printer matter?
Thanks,
Jim.

Jim,
I did use a standard printer to print the barcodes.
As far as cost, I had found one that was free.
I think the one on the link below is free as well.

Dear Jim H.

I'm no expert, however, I have used the 3 of 9 to successfully scan
barcodes. I don't *think* font size matters, but are you aware that you must
add an asterisk before and after the actual number you wish to use? So, if
you want to scan "12345" you *actually* need to send "*12345*" to the
printer...

Fred likely has the correct answer. Other bar codes do require check
digits.

Yes, they can matter and there are rules on this of which I'm unaware
of the details. But I'd think that if you are printing the human
readable portion just below and that is readable even to folks over 40
then you likely don't have a problem.

Thanks. I found 3 of 9 free and print it through Access
report but the scanner could not read it. does size of
printed barcode matter?

Thanks Tony, I downloaded the 3 of 9 from your site and
follow Q271488] and it seems I can print. However I even
make it 26 pinto but my scanner could not read it. I have
a handheld scanner, I am able to scan old barcodes but
not the one I print. Is there any other fonts I can try?
the printed barcodes do not look like the ones already
printed from old system.
Thanks,
Jim.

Did you add the "*"s before and after the digits as per Fred's
suggestion?

Yes I did. I followed exactly what is said in Q271488.

Then I'm not sure what the problem could be. Can you even see the
human readable portion? Presumably this is a laser printer?

Is the scanner set to accept 3 of 9? Can you locate a barcode which
came in from somewhere else, or in a setup book which has 3of9, print
the same information from within Access and compare the two?

Size, printer resolution, and the quality of the font all matter. We had no
luck with free fonts, and ended up buying a font, which worked perfectly.
But I've seen posts from others who had no problems with free fonts, so I
guess we were just trying the wrong ones.

Hi Jim:

The type of barcode scanner I use is connected to the computer's keyboard
input, and sends the scanned information to the computer as if it were typed
at the keyboard. Is that what you are using? When I first set up the
scanner, I didn't use Access at all to test it. I simply opened up WordPad,
made it the active window and scanned the barcode. The output of the scanner
was then displayed in WordPad. Doing this ensured that the scanner/barcode
was working correctly. Then I went and tried to use it in Access. Just an
idea...

Also, to reiterate what Tony said, the scanner I use can be set up to use a
wide variety of barcodes. Perhaps your scanner needs to be specifically set
up to use 3 of 9? Mine also has settings for things like "Minimum Length"
and "Maximum Length"; perhaps there is some setting like that that your
scanner is using that is interfering with its interpretation of the barcode?

Good Luck!
Fred Boer

P.S. And that just about uses up all my ideas! Hope you can get it going!

Yes I did. I followed exactly what is said in Q271488.

Fred and Tony, thank you very much for your help. I do
not know what the problem was but I am able to scan it
now.
My last question; can I find letter size barcode label
papers in the market and use my laser jet printer and
print many barcodes at a time. Right now we are using a
specific barcode printer that prints one at a time and I
want to get rid of that.
Thanks for your help.
Jim.

That's funny, I was so excited to get a single label thermal printer which
could spit out one label at a time a few months ago! <g> Glad you have it
working! Do you mean an 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet of labels? If so, then, sure,
there all sorts of these, with hundreds of different sized labels. The
Access Label wizard actually includes many manufacturers and their various
sizes of sheets of labels. Avery, for example... So, try your local office
supply store, I'm sure there is a size to fit your needs....

The best way to print bar codes from an Access database report is to
use a bar code ActiveX control. Fonts produce poor quality bar codes
that can be difficult to read. With fonts, you also have to add start
and stop codes to the bar code data and you also have to calculate
check digits yourself. A good bar code ActiveX control will do
everything for you and it will also be much easier to use - in
addition to printing much better quality bar codes.
The best bar code ActiveX control available is the TAL Bar Code
ActiveX control. You can download a trial version from complete with
an Access database sample that shows how to use it from:
