Print and connection to network share fails occasionally (win2k3 + win98)

Hi People!

I support a small ethernet network with 5 client (4x Win98, 1xWinXP;2
clients is wireless connected: 802.11b) and one new Windows 2003
Server Standard. The server runs as PDC, DNS, DHCP, WINS, file server
and print server. Occasionally (most often in the morning) the client
fails to print and/or read and/or write from/to network shares.

When the print error occur no document get print from the client that
is affected. Other clients may work fine. On the server a print error
13 appear; that is: document from [user] was deleted.

When the file share error occur, the client cant either not connect
the the network share or not open files on the network share in
Microsoft Office XP. When the user can't connect to the network share
at all it recieves errors like "Disk Full" or "Access denied". When
the problem occur in Office some of the file get read but with errors
(missing information).

I'm not sure that the Windows XP client i affected.

The client is always ping-able and I'm able to remote control them
with NetMeeting.

Sometimes reboot of the client does the job.

Best regards

So the problem is only with the Win98 Clients? Is the XP system effected?

If it is just the Windows 98 systems being effected then you might think LM
Compatibility level etc, but a reboot wouldn't fix that ie it would always
behave that way.

What are the errors the client is getting when they attempt to access files?

Problem solved!

The error messages was caused by a poor implentations of client
licensing. When I changed the value of licens' from 5 to 100 it fixed
the problem. I know now that Windows NT/2k/2k3 in fact is known for
these kind of problems in the licensing layer.

That's it!
