Primary IDE channel

I have 2 HD's, one DVD burner, one fast CD burner, and a DVD-ROM. I also
have an ULTRA ATA/133 card where I have mounted everything but the DVD-ROM.
This last is connected to the primary IDE channel of the motherboard as
master. But when the machine detects the motherboard IDE devices, it detects
the DVD all right but with an error message: "primary IDE channel, no 80
conductor cable installed" I do not even know what an 80 cable is, so your
help will be appreciated.

There are two types of IDE ribbon cable... the older ones with 40 wires, the
newer with 80 wires. You need to use an 80 wire ribbon cable for speeds
over ATA66. BTW the 80 wire type cable isn't that new... it's been out
about 3+ years!

Thank you. How do you tell which cables are 40 wires and which ones are 80
wires?

Count the wires. Usually they will have a blue end as well. Any computer shop can supply you with one.

Hi,

Simply look for a cable where the end plug is blue !
This indicates 80 pin type.

Can you count? A blind man can tell the difference by the feel of the
cables!
