Primary DNS Suffix Question

T

Tom Naves

I am using a BIND 9 nameserver. When I configure dns on a Windows 2000 or
Windows XP client it seems sufficient to add my domain name to the "Append
these DNS suffixes" window in DNS in Advanced TCP/IP Settings. This does
not require a reboot like adding the Primary Sufix in DNS Suffix and Netbios
Computer name, which is a good thing.

I am not using Windlws 2000 net working. I have a Windows NT network. It
seems that adding Primary Sufix in DNS Suffix and Netbios Computer name is
only relevant when using dynamic dns. Is this true or is their another
reason for it?

Thanks

not sure if this is what you mean

The "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" button causes the client name (the machine name) to be appended to the domain name automatically. For example, if your primary DNS suffix was "abc.com" and you pinged "xyz" the computer would query "xyz.abc.com"

"Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix" causes the computer to remove names from the left side in order to find matches. For example, if your primary DNS suffix was "def.ghi.com" and you pinged "xyz" the computer would query "xyz.ghi.com" and "xyz.def.ghi.com"

hope that makes sense
