Previous install not completed - unable to install new applications

I had Win XP Pro working fine until my Norton Anti-Virus
died. I cannot reinstall that or another application.

I had Norton Anti-virus V6.5 and Symantec FireWall. I
install an AT&T VPN client which seemed to affect the NAV.
I removed the VPN client via the uninstall. The NAV
uninstalled OK.

On reinstall of the NAV, the installation was completed
but the app would not work. The automated uninstall
failed. I manually uninstalled the app, and now it will
not install. The install gave the first information box of
the install starting and then it disappeared with no
further activity. A second attempt, gave the error
box 'previous install not completed'.

I have tried to install Nero 5.5, and this installation
gets started and terminates without error.

Any ideas ????
