Previewing file in 'details'

I think I'm loosing my mind. I thought I used to be able to preview at least
the first page of a document in the details section of Windows Explorer.
There was some way when saving a file that I could indicate I wanted to save
a preview. Can't find that option now nor can I view a preview of the file.
Any one have any ideas of what I'm missing?

Clarification - The detail shows a thumbnail of any images or .pdf files.
This is where it used to show a thumbnail of a word file (or any other office
file for that matter).

Folder options, General, Show common tasks.......

Thanks Bob. I have that set. But I am only seeing the thumbnail of either a
graphic image or a pdf file. Anything else displays the file name, file
type, date modified and the size of the file.

The image preview would likely be generated at the time the file is
originally saved. I vaguely remember that but it has been a long time.
You may want to investigate the Save As options in the application in
question.

Yup, been there, checked that. Like you, I vaguely remember that I could
stipulate saving a preview of a file when I was saving it. Don't remember
which version of Office had that but I can't find it now.

In the Save as dialog box is "Preview" set?

Jumped too fast. Found preview but it didn't make any difference. Still
have the word icon and don't see a preview in the details section.

here's more info. Created a new document, in File/Properties/Summary I
checked Save preview picture. Then I did save as - preview. Still didn't
work. I'm pulling my hair out!

Ok, is there any prohibition as to "Web View" or such on the PC? And you
are NOT having Thumbnails set for the folder as that will stop the
preview also.

Here's what I found out. I can create a brand new file, set the flag in
properties to save preview picture and save it normally. Then it is viewable
as a thumbnail. If I try to create a new file with copies of the content of
an old file (one that did not have the save preview property set) but I set
that flag in the new file - the new file will not display as a thumbnail.
This makes no sense. I even moved some stuff around in the new file, made
sure that the property flag was set but still no luck. Very strange behavior.

Do Save AS and save it over the original doesn't work? How about open a
new file, Insert, File, and plug in the file you want to fix "Preview"
of, and then Save that with the preview option set.

the only thing I haven't done is save it over the original. Would have
thought that when I created a new file with a new name but with the same
content it wouldn't have known that it was the same thing! I did set the
preview flag in the new file and did a save as. As I said - this is crazy.

I remember that you must set that flag when you originally save the file.
That's why I thought that by creating a new file..... I even closed Word and
reopened it before I copied the content into a new file.

I hate it when the computer is this smart!

The "new defaults" of any upgraded operating system or application
always drive me wonky until I get them nailed down the way I'm used to
them too.

Web View seemed to be most on target in this thread, but I also can't set the
details preview pane like in win2k. Any resolve to this? All my files already
have previews associated, it is just that the window configuration won't
allow the preview. Not interested in icon or thumnail view at all.
