preview pane doesn't show after option is selected

I have always had the preview pane in Outlook. Yesterday, however, it
disappeared. I have gone into all the options and checked the box next to
"preview pane" as i always have before, and it is selected, but the preview
pane never shows. this happened on my office and home computers both running
XP professional with all updates, though different versions of Outlook.

Please help.

Is View>Reading Pane still checked? You haven't accidentally dragged its
border all the way to the Outlook border, have you?
