Prevent Word 2000 document from creating a backup copy

We use Office 2000 on Windows XP network. I have a user that seems to be
saving backups to Word documents. I checked Tools, Options, Save and the
Always create backups is NOT checked. She also had Version turned on, but
with that turned off, it was still generating backups. Where do we look for
any other options for this?

Exactly what (filename and extension) and where are these "backups"? Could
they be temporary files (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632)? What
are their sizes in relation to the current document file?

There aren't any other options in Word (except for the unlikely one of a
macro you don't know about) but there are some possibilities in the
configuration of the folders the documents live in. If the user doesn't have
permissions to modify and/or delete files in those folders, it's possible
that Word isn't allowed to do its normal cleanup of temp files when it
exits.

Try the cleanup steps in
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm and then watch what
new "backups" appear.

Jay, the extension on the backup is wbk and are saved in the same file as the
document. I do not see any tmp files in this folder at all so I don't think
this is where the tmp files are. I will have to look into this further.

If "Always create backup copy" is disabled then no NEW .wbk files should be
appearing. If you delete those that are there already, do you keep getting
new ones?

Hi Glen,

The .wbk files are indeed the ones created when the "Always create backups"
option is checked. If new ones are still being created when the option is
unchecked, then you may have a corrupted registry key. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/DataKeySettings.htm. (In my mind,
the sections in that article are slightly out of order. Read "How to
preserve your Settings preferences" before "Deleting/Renaming the entire
Data key".)
