I have an old program (Power Chinese)
which seems to want the CD in the drive
to work. I would rather copy all
the files to the hard drive.

Is there software that will create
a pretend CD drive letter, allowing
all the files to be on the hard drive?

thanks
Mu.

Daemon Tools will create a fake CD/DVD drive that you can mount images
to.

There are also tools available that let you script the mount/unmount.
I use that so when my kids click on a shortcut it mounts the correct CD
image and starts the program.

It came to pass that on 05 Apr 2006, (e-mail address removed) scribed thusly to
all in alt.comp.freeware the following inspiration:

ISORecorderSetup.msi by Alex Feinman. It's one of the MS Power Toy's

http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder/download.asp

From the Description provided by the program setup:
ISO Recorder Power Toy is a UI component that allows to use CD-Recording
capabilities of Windows XP® to record ISO images and copy CD to CD - a piece
of functionality missing in Windows XP®.
The ISO Recorder itself does not record CDs but instead uses existing OS
features. Some of the interfaces it uses are not fully documented by
Microsoft and as such are subject to change in the future.
This software works on Windows XP only . It was tested with retail build of
Windows XP (Home and Professional)

Then download VCdControlTool.exe from here.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4402.html

and use it to mount a Virtual CD image you made using the ISO Recorder tool
above.

Follow the inmstructions for both tools. They work like a charm and I have
two file servers setup running virtual about a dozen CD's on each box. I've
tried others and did not like the limitations (only 4 CD's, cannot make it
permanent mount or other nits). And both are free.

But unfortuntely, Daemon Tools is adware. And adware is something that
we frown upon here on alt.comp.freeware.

Hello,
But unfortuntely, Daemon Tools is adware. And adware is
something that we frown upon here on alt.comp.freeware.

for me adware is something, that lives with the application,
in this case you are asked during installation and can choose
not to install "DAEMON Tools Search Bar" without harming
functionality of the app. This is nasty, but common to many
programs nowadays. I think, that every user should be warned
along with app recommendation, but more detailed than the
adware buzz word...

I use something called Alcohol 52%. I suspect that it's not actually
freeware as such, but I got it "free" with a magazine.

Works like a charm!

Oops, the version I run is a couple of years old and is NOT adware.
While I don't agree that it is now true adware (doesn't irfanview do
something like this?) I'll remember to point out that they've now
included a toolbar you need to watch out for when I mention it in the
future.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Or we can use what adware means which is advertiser supported software
or software which you can download the software for free but you are
subjected to watching ads. I dispise adware because many of the apps
use companies which are dirty companies & install spyware along with
the apps.

With adware, if you remove the ads without paying for the software, you
aren't allowed to use the prog anymore. If I see an adware enabled app,
I don't download it & I look for a freeware alternative, if I can't
find a freeware alternative, I still won't download adware & I'll wait
until a freeware alternative is created.

I don't get your point. With this definition Daemon Tools are not
adware as you can decide while installing not to install the
toolbar and the application itself will install and work with
no problem, fully legal, no hack or crack.

I said the same as Eric now did, it's not adware, but anyone should
mention not to install this toolbar on app recommendation.

For me Daemon Tools work very well. The other applications
mentioned in this thread are ISO creators along with a virtual
drive, do they also load other image formats (CUE/WAV for
example)? Or is "Virtual CloneDrive"* an alternative? Do I need
to look for an alterative?
