Prescott (Celerons) and Extreme Edition CPUs questions

Microsoft recommends flashing the bios for cpu with less then
microcode revision 8. If a bios update is not Available . They say
before you install xp sp2. . To rename the update.sys in safe mode and
install xp sp2 from safe mode. This will allow sp2 to work.

How come the renaming works?
Why do you need a bios update for certain Prescott cpu?
Shouldn’t all you need is to have Microsoft patch update.sys?

I been telling other people to either rename the update.sys or flash
their bios if they have a Prescott cpu with less the revision 8
