"Preparing to install" during startup

How do I clear incomplete installs?

Charter Net, local cable company, made changes to my
system during broadband installation.

My system now displays "Preparing to install" pop up
every time it starts up -- twice.

It's as if there's some setting somewhere that tells the
system to finish an insallation that never gets finished.

I think its trying to install software, but in any case,
how do if figure out what it's trying to install?
Everything looks normal once I get through the
2 "Preparing to install" sequences.

Note, I don't have to do anything, the boxes just come
up, run for a while and then go away.

Note also, that I am running updated antivirus.
