PPTVIEW do not play Shockwave ActiveX Control (2003)

Eric Audren

Hi,

I built a .PPT including an "Shockwave ActiveX Control"
(link to a .DCR). The "Show" option (F5) of POWERPNT.EXE
plays the Shockwave. Everything is ok. But, the Shwockwave
is not played by the viewer PPTVIEW.EXE.

An other example : I built a .PPT including a "Shockwave
Flash Object" (an other ActiveX Control link to a .SWF).
POWERPNT.EXE does the right thing. PPTVIEW.EXE displays
the .SWF, but do not allowed interactivity. The mouse
never change when passing over an active zone.

PPTOOLS (http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00153.htm)
gives the info that the PowerPoint Viewer 2003 version
supports the ActiveX Controls.

Do ActiveX Controls can be actually played by the Viewer ?

Maybe a pb of config/version or ... ?
Any ideas ?

Many thanks,
Eric.

Shyam,

Thanks for your answer. More questions :
Where could I find it into the Microsoft specs?
Do you know the reason why?
Will it be implemented in the next version?

Thanks and regards,
Eric.

I was told this is by design as it could be possible secruity issue. Makes
the new viewer unusable for me.

The Viewer download page doesn't mention ActiveX specifically, but it
does mention not supporting "Running macros, programs, or opening linked
or embedded objects."

I wouldn't hold my breath for the next version supporting these, either,
because of potential security issues.

Is your use of ActiveX limited to "Shockwave Flash Object" controls?

No. Our presentations also need VBA support to be able to continually show
(kiosk) the current date and time which the native Powerpoint time field
doesn't do. We also display web sites using VBA and the browser control.
Not to mention we control the current viewer through automation from a c++
program which we can't do with 2003.
