Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question, but this is the
first time I've had to setup a VPN. I have read that when
establishing a VPN connection, the computers transmit
packets via TCP/IP. But in order for those packets to be
encrypted you need to install PPTP or IPSec. I am trying
to work with PPTP. I have also read that you can install
the PPTP protocol in Network Connections in the Control
Panel. When I go there and select my NIC I then click
the "Install" button and select Protocol. I then get a
list protocols that are available to install. From what I
understand PPTP is suppose to be listed there. However it
is not. I have tried this on a few computers all with the
same results. How do I go about installing and
configuring PPTP??

Thanks and again sorry if this is such a basic question.

Debbie,
To setup a VPN, you need a server running PPTP or IPSEC -
I konw that you can setup the VPN host service on a
Windows server, but I usually setup linux firewalls to
provide this service so I'll pass on trying to walk you
through that part of the equation.

On the desktop, Windows 2000 & XP come with the ability to
setup a PPPTP connection. IPSEC involves client software
and is much, much more difficult to setup. To set up
PPPTP connection on Windows XP:
Open Network Connections
Select Make a New Connection
Select Connect to a computer at my workplace
Select Virtual Pricvate Network Connection
Enter the name of the company you are connecting to
If you need to dial a number to get onto the internet make
sure the connection you use to get onto the internet is
listed with the automatically dial option, if you are on a
LAN and have access to the internet via the LAN, choose
the do not dial option
Enter the IP address of the computer (firewall/router)
that is running the ppptp server or the dns name -
xxx.yyy.com
Then choose whether you want to have a shortcut to this
connection on your desktop.
