PPTP VPN Connection fails to register

Hello, after weeks of fighting XP pro trying to get its vpn server to
actually -work-; i gave up, and flashed my routers firmware with an
open source firmware with a built in pptp server. The xp machines on my
network can connect to the pptp server fine very simply without any
problems whatsoever. However, I have problems when trying to connect
with my w2k laptop (which was to be the main computer using the vpn in
the first place). What happens is this; The connection is established.
the username and password are verified, then the connection attempt
hangs at the "registering your computer on the network" screen, then
after a good while times out with Error 619: the specified port is not
connected. Can anyone please help me on this? I cant get why my xp
machines work, yet 2k does not.

This usually happens when a router does not handle
IP protocol ID 47 (GRE).

but again, my xp computers connect fine, therefore I would think that
this is not the case. besides, since the router -is- the server, it
would have to handle GRE

I am still having this problem. does anyone have any ideas? GRE is not
being blocked, as my xp computers can connect to the pptp server
without issue, but the 2k pc hangs at registering.

Here is what I would do in your situation, in this order:

1. Try to reach a different Win2000 PC.
2. Use a different router or preferably firewall with
documented support for VPNs. Most Netgear routers
support VPNs.
3. Put your question to Google Answers
(https://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=myquestions).
This will cost you a moderate (and agreed!) amount of money
and it will give you a guaranteed outcome. No success, no fee!
I have used the service before with a VPN problem and I
received an excellent answer in no time at all.

Okay, well, here is an update. but first a clarification.
my router is a linksys wrt54g, which has documented support for vpns.
regardless of which, port forwarding did not appear to be working at
all. Ive replaced the firmware in my router with DD-wrt, which has a
built in vpn server; so, the router IS the server. But I must stress
that the router does not appear to be the problem, since my xp clients
connect fine.

Now on to more info and some slight progress.
I found that my symantec client firewall on my 2k machine was blocking
the vpn connection for some odd reason, so, after disabling the
services, i now get past the registering message, and actually get a
"you are connected" message. However, if i am connected, the connection
is killed almost immediately upon establishement, as the network
connections folder shows the connection as disconnected, and there is
no icon in my systray.

I will take a peek at google answers, but any help in this forum is
still appreciated.

Disabling your firewall is often not the answer - uninstall it!

I just noticed the "MVP". Is it a new award or did you just start including
it in the display name? ( or was I just dense and never saw it was there
all along?
:) )

It's been around for some time . . .

unfortunately, that is not an option. I despise software firewalls.
I did, however, manage to fully connect successfully today... ONCE. :p
havent suceeded again since. Wish I knew what the cause was

I'm not suggesting to remove your firewall permanently
but certainly during the testing phase.

it simply isnt an option. im am a power user on the computer, but do
not have the access needed to remove it entirely. i have however, set
the firewall service(s) to manual, and stopped them entirely.

It's your show . . . It's just that a great many of my own
problems and problems reported in newsgroups are
caused by firewalls. Temporarily uninstalling them can
show the path to a quick and successful resolution.
