ppt file automatically opens as slideshow

when i want to edit a ppt file and open it, the file automatically opens as a
slideshow. when i escape, the show ends and the file automatically closes. i
know that this is what happens with .pps files, but it shouldn't happen with
..ppt files.

the only way i can edit a ppt file is to open it from inside powerpoint app,
which is a pain. my default view is set to "normal - slides only", but i
can't understand why i can't open ppt files in design mode.

thanks in advance,
sherveen

It's either A Sign that someone or something doesn't like doubleclicking stuff
OR (and far more likely) that the file associations for PPT files have gotten
mildly messed up.

Try this:

Start PPT, then choose "Detect & Repair" from the Help menu. It might ask for
your Office CD, but probably not.

thank Steve. the "detect and repair" took about 10 minutes, but it solved the
problem. it did ask me for the office xp pro cd, though.

Glad that sorted it out.

If it happens again, you can also try this:

Quit PPT if it's running
Click Start
Click Run...
In the dialog box that appears next, type

powerpnt.exe /regserver

Click OK

(note: that's powerpnt.exe, not powerPOINT.exe)

You might try locating a .ppt file in Windows Explorer. Right click it and
choose "Open With". Choose to open it with PowerPoint (the program). Click
before "always use this program to open this type file". You or someone
else might have previously selected to use PPT Viewer to open a .ppt file.

I have Explorer set up to open .pps files with the Viewer but open .ppt
files with the PPT program.
