PPt 2003

I am using a 4yr old Dell that came with W98 and upgraded
to XP last year. The PP presentations ran fine with
97Viewer and still do. I just installed Office PP 2003
and it will NOT open the PP files, nor when I created a
test slide, would it even read and display it. It's as
though the PP read function is blocked????
The msg. I get is "PowerPoint can't read
(path/filename)". I think all the PP presentations were
created without any security (password protection) so
that should not be the problem. I also have a couple of
other PP files not Squadron related and it won't read
those either. I do think that MS has made a format change
of the .ppt files with the 2003 PP software but that
would not explain why it wouldn't read a file that was
created by it.

Open PPT, go to Help/Check for Updates. Install the critical patch.

That *should* take care of it.

I installed the critical update day one and the problems
indicated below all happened AFTER installing the update.
Major question??? Why would a slide created by PP 2003
not be readable by the same program that created it?????

That's a good question, Dave. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer.

http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00135.htm has some information, but
nothing which seems applicable to your situation.

Where are you saving the files after creating the tests? Are they on your
harddrive?

I am aware of the patch. It was installed and verified
before I asked for help. I'm
guessing it must be something else. Also
I tried creating a slide with the 2003 PP software, saved
it, and I could not open it. Same error msg. However, the
97 viewer displayed it just fine.

The critical patch should resolve the issue. Since it hasn't, I'd give
Microsoft Support a call.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

It sounds like there's a good chance that you are running into a known
problem with Office applications and Norton's AntiVirus software.

The Norton AntiVirus plug-in for Microsoft Office scans documents for macro
virus infections in Office products. This plug-in may cause performance
issues, the inability to open files within Office (such as design templates
in PowerPoint), or the inability to install some Office applications.

The latest information about the problems associated with this plug-in can
be located in the following KB article:
