I'd like to distribute my ppt file to several people, but want to prevent
anyone from modifying that. Is there a way?

Ah, I think I figured it out. One needs to go to Tools and the Security tab.
To make it read-only, I only provide the password for modification, and
none for opening the file. When another person tries to open the file, he
can select Read-only.
