A .pps file is just a PowerPoint Show file, that is, a normal
presentation file which will open up in full screen mode as soon as you
double-click it.

It's a PowerPoint program. If you have PowerPoint you can run it with it.
If all you wish to do is view pps files and not create or edit them, you can
download and install the free PowerPoint viewer. Version 97 doesn't say
it's also for Windows XP but it works for me.
