PPP adapter RAS Server (Dial In) Interface

I've got a Windows 2000 Server machine setup with RRAS to accept incoming VPN
connections.

Whenever I connect to the server, I notice that it has given itself another
IP on an interface labeled "PPP Adapter RAS Server". What's the purpose of
this additional IP? Does it act as a proxy between the two networks?

The extra interface is the server's end of the PPP/PPTP connection. For
VPN, the tunnel is created between the client's "received" IP address and
the server's "virtual" IP address.

If the remote clients are using addresses in the same IP subnet as the
LAN then the server does act as a proxy for the remote clients. If the
remote clients are not in the same IP subnet as the LAN machines then the
extra interface has an IP in the same subnet as the remote machines and the
traffic is routed through this interface to the LAN.
