Powers off before installing 1 of 97 patches

Hi All,

I had to do an in place reinstall of XP-Pro-SP2 to
remove a whole bunch of corruptions from a customer's
machine.

Problem: now when it goes to power off, it tells
me that it had "1 of 97" patches to install and to
wait, it will power itself off after it install them.
Then it promptly powers itself off. This repeats every
power off.

How do I get these patches to install?

Many thanks,

I might make a stab at you got the auto updates set unattended and the
shutdown overwrides it anyway. Microsoft is not perfect, the shutdown
may supersede the install. Granted I would agree with you but.... Do
the windows install yourself. See if there are 97 pending and
manually install them. Then also check the status up your WU settings.
Just a thought!

Hi Big Al,

I just noticed I can download SP3 from Major Geeks. I
think I will install that first, before doing any more
trouble shooting. Would you concur?

Any Google/Newsgroup searches for your problem before asking? I only ask
because this newsgroup is over-flowing with the following answer ( I know -
I have posted it many times myself... ;-) ):

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)

You may want to scan for (custom) updates manually:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Do all suggested methods. Hope that helps!

Although MajorGeeks is probably reliable and that probably *is* the final
release of SP3 - I'd still wonder about it. It's not a true Microsoft
channel and Microsoft has not 100% publically released the SP3 update (will
within days...)

I think you should go through the fix you need to do anyway either way.
(Posted elsewhere in this thread to resolve the specific problem for the
specific reasons you gave it styarted happening - you did a repair install
and your updates stopped working, that link could not be made more for your
situation than it is...)

"Just Google it": the new RTFM ;-)

Sometimes the trick with Google is knowing the proper
keywords. These I too infrequently find out after
someone else points out the article to me. :'(

"Just Google it": the new RTFM ;-)

Or newsgroup searches. It's always advisable (always has been) to search
the newsgroups to see if your question was previously asked/answered before
posting. ;-) Nothin is meant by the suggestion to Google search other than
the 'teach a man to fish' method of answering.

Yes. This is true. For example, on this one:

A google for:
Windows XP patches do not install

http://www.google.com/search?q=Wind...d=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8

Comes up with many hits. One (top 6 or so) is:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/mowgreen/index.php?showentry=1170

Which links you to the same place I sent you to. ;-)
Thank you! I am going to save that article to
disk (thumb drive) and keep it with me.

Hopefully someone else will be able to search and find the answer more
easily given the number of different ways this has been phrased and answered
over the past 6+ months now. Your posting will undoubtedly add a keyword or
two so that someone else might be able to find this answer. ;-)

I did not think you meant anything other than that.
That's why I felt safe to crack the Google/RTFM joke.

:)

I appreciate all your help.
