POWERPOINT UPGRADE FAILURE

Guest

I've just purchased an upgrade of Powerpoint in the belief that I only needed
an upgrade because I already have Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003.
However I cannot get past the validation screen - I follow the on screen
instructions and put my Office Basic Edition 2003 disc in the D: drive but it
just hangs.

Can anyone help please?

Read the box carefully and see if it has some text titled "System Requrements"
or "Applies to" or something similar. The upgrade eligibility is also
documented at
http://www.microsoft.com/office/powerpoint/howtobuy/default.mspx#XSLTsection126121120120
and unfortunately the Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003 is not eligible for
any upgrades. It's a specially licensed version that manufacturers include on
many off-the-shelf or customized systems and it is licensed "as is" and only for
the system you purchased. That's why it is relatively inexpensive.

You'll need to purchase the "full" version of PowerPoint 2003.

Thanks Sonia,

I appreciate your speedy response - even though it's not the answer I wanted
to hear. I spent a lot of time reading the website to see if I could upgrade
with what I had - the subtle difference between 'standard' and 'basic' eluded
me and now I have to waste even more time taking my opened software box back
to the store and persuading them to exchange it for a full version.

It's a pity the website doesn't make things a bit clearer because from all
the questions raised on this subject it seems I am not the only moron who
failed to understand the Powerpoint upgrade rules!

IMO, the blame (and the M-word) belong to the people who think up these weird little
exercises in marketing weasality and user aggravation.

And then change the rules with every release.

Not your fault at all.

It seems I have the same interest and question with respect to an upgrade
for Microsoft Office.

I have a Dell XPS Gen5 with a Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition OS
with a 500 GB Hard Drive. The PC arrived with OEM-installed "Microsoft Office
Basic Edition 2003" (Version: 11.0.6). This Microsoft Office version includes
Office Excel 2003, Office Word 2003 and Office Outlook 2003.
It does NOT include Microsft Office PowerPoint 2003.
I would like to upgrade with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 software, but
it does NOT appear I can simply purchase a stand-alone PowerPoint software CD.
If I purchase a new CD of Microsoft Office 2003 that includes all four (4)
software tools (Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint) do I need to:

- Uninstall the OEM-installed software (Microsoft Office Basic Edition 2003)
? or
- Can I install the new Microsoft purchased edition of Microsoft Office 2003
that incudes all four software features "over" the existing OEM-installed
software?
- Will all of the existing Word, Excel, Jpeg, pdf documents I have stored in
the "My Documents" folder of my PC be affected in any way from an upgrade
(either unistall and install or install and overwrite on old version). Will
these saved files be OK?
- Any other advice is welcome for this software upgrade

Thanks,
