Powerpoint - stopping gif animation in a clip art.

In PowerPoint is it possible to stop the animation in a gif clip art and
still have the clip art showing in its "frozen" position?

The only way I have been able to achieve that effect is to make a duplicate
slide and replace the gif clip art with the clip art image saved as a png.

It depends on the version of PowerPoint and how the GIF was constructed. It
sounds like your GIF is set to loop indefinitely. The details are at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/animated_gifs/gifs.htm.
However, the bottom line is that if you are using PowerPoint 2000, there is a
bug and all animated GIFs loop forever. For PowerPoint 2002 you can edit the
GIF and set the number of iterations you want. For PowerPoint 2003 you need to
set it to one number higher than what you want because it also has a bug.
