Powerpoint Shows not playing in order

One of our users created 8 powerpoint shows (don't ask me why) on his
desktop, win2k, Office 97, and saved copies on a shared drive on a
Novell network. They are numbered 1.pps to 8.pps. When he selects them
on his machine by hitting ctrl and choosing them starting at number 8
and going to number 1 and plays them, they play in order, 1 through 8.
When another user with the same software versions plays them from the
shared drive, or by copying them to his local hard drive, they always
play in random order. Any ideas?

As I understand it, the order of files returned from a "multi-select" is
undefined or may be dependent on the OS and software version.

I'd say that if it's important that the presentations be played in a certain
order, the "owner" should work out a different way to make it happen since
ctrl+selecting isn't reliable.

If they only need to view and not edit presentations, they could use List files
(see LST in PPT Help).

Thanks, I tried that and a popup box says that .lst files are no
longer supported and says I should search on "Showing multiple
Presentations" in help, but there are no instructions in help for this
feature.

Oh rats. My mistake for leaving something out ... I mentioned "if your users
only need to view and not edit presentations" but left out the part I meant to
throw in about "they can use the PPT Viewer". You're correct, of course. PPT
itself doesn't do lists.

Sigh. Yeah.

What's the goal here? Can the files be combined into one presentation or
linked from one to another?

Hi,
Thanks a lot for the advice. The long term goal is to get my user to
get powerpoint training, the short term goal is to allow him to present
the pps files he has already created in order. I'll get him to
download the viewer and use the list.

Thanks for everyone's help!

One other possibility that might be even simpler, then:

Open presentation #1
Choose Insert, Slides, From File and insert all the slides from presentation 2
Repeat until all slides have been inserted into first presentation.
Save under a new name.

Note: if the presentations all have different formatting, this may not be the
best way to go.
