Does anyone know if there is a settings file for PowerPoint.

Every time I leave PowerPoint it comes up with an error.

As far as I can see it's not writing any new settings to disk,
so every time I open it I get such things as old files listed in
the recent file list and old menu arrangements, so something
is not being saved.

This is on PowerPoint 2003 for Windows.

If there is a settings file can anyone point me to it's location.

Many thanks.

Andy

That's it there isn't an error as such.

When I close PowerPoint I get the following message:-
"PowerPoint has encountered a problem and needs to close
and do I want to send a report".

I could try a repair I suppose, but the last time this happened
I had to do a reinstall to clear it.

I just thought that because it keeps restarting with old settings,
it wasn't saving this information on exit, possibly due to a corrupt file.

Thanks

Andy

If you're getting an old MRU, it sounds as if the registry isn't being
written to properly. Might be a security setting. But what do you mean by
"old menu arrangements"?

I'd try the Detect and Repair for starters. It doesn't take long and is
worth a try.

Yes I have Camtasia, Snagit and PPTools loaded.

As regards to old menu arrangements, I run on a dual screen set-up
with menus on one screen and PowerPoint on the other.
When this error first occurred, I had moved PowerPoint to the other
monitor to do something, and now it keeps opening on that monitor
and the menus are not arranged as I had last had them.

I would start by removing all add ins, testing to see if the problem is
resolved, and then set up the monitors and re-install the add ins.

There are known problems when Camtasia/Snagit and other add-ins are loaded, and
what you're seeing is one of the symptoms.

TechSmith (Camtasia/SnagIt's ownder) is aware of the problem and working on a
fix. I'd check for updates every so often.

PPTools (that'd be me) is also aware of the problem and can't do diddly about
it 'cause it's caused by Camtasia.

Until the fix is available, you'll need to uninstall the Techsmith products
then reinstall them, but disable the PowerPoint addin option. That should, I
think, sidestep the problem.

I just thought I would let you know that Camtasia
seemed to be the cause of my problem.

Uninstalling it solved the crash on exit.

Many thanks

Thanks for the feedback. I figured that'd solve it.

My understanding (ECHO!! KATHY!!! Can you confirm, please?) is that you can
install Camtasia again ... that as long as you don't let the installer add the
PPT addin, you should be OK. Whether there are problems with the other Office
add-ins, I don't know; might be safest to leave them all out.

This way you can still get good use out of Camtasia. It's the addins that
cause the conflict, not Camtasia itself.

And lest there be any confusion ... I use both Camtasia and SnagIt and think
highly of both. And even more so of TechSmith. They'll get this fixed, of
that I'm sure.

Yes, confirmed. You can install Camtasia, just deselect the PPT add-in
option.

Not everyone will run into this issue -- it's got something to do with what
add-in gets loaded or unloaded when or something -- and I am confident it
will be fixed soon.

And yup, SnagIt and Camtasia both get big thumbs up from me.

I second all of this:
- Camtasia is fine to use, just don't install the PPT add-in.
- TechSmith will get this fixed.
- I can't live without either SnagIt or Camatasia.

If that isn't a resounding enough recommendation for both products, let me
know and I will write a better one!

Thanks for the confirm on that.
