Powerpoint problems when displaying on both screen and via projector

I have a powerpoint presentation (Powerpoint 2003). When the
presentation is viewed in slideshow mode on just the laptop screen all
is good. When the presenation is viewed in slideshow mode to a
projector with the laptop screen off all is good. When I display with
both the laptop screen and the projector some symbols disappear
(underscores, equal signs, etc.). I have duplicated this on several
laptops with different video chipsets.
Any ideas?

Was all of this using the same projector? If so, what kind of projector is
it?

This was duplicated on a NEC NP2000 projector, but the person using it
states that he has seen the problem with other projectors. Again the
problem only occurs when the PP Presentation is displayed
simultaneously on the computer screen and the projector. At first I
thought it might be a video card issue, but it happens on both a
laptop and a podium computer that is a desktop machine.
