Powerpoint isn't recognizing some mp3 sound files - Why

Some of my sound files go in fine. Others, either from CD or Itunes, appear
to play (timeline runs) but no sound. Rest of sound in presentation is
running fine so I know its not those settings. I have tried "converting to
MP3" and burn/rip back to file. The only other thing I noticed is that
Windows Media player doesn't display the MP3 files in its list either with
the file type set to MP3. This directory list, however, shows them as MP3.

PPT won't play iTunes files. You'd have to burn an audio CD of the file and
then rip it as an MP3.

Not sure what to tell you about the music from CD not playing. Is it an
audio CD or a data CD? How'd you insert the sound file?

How exactly did you "convert to MP3 and burn/rip back to file"? What
software are you using? Sounds to me (no pun intended) as if whatever
process you're using doesn't really create true MP3s.

If you go to Start|Run and type mplay32.exe , do the sound files in question
play in that media player?
