Powerpoint fails to open PP files created in earlier version

I have PP files created on my old machine using the same version of PP but
the machine was not XP. Although the files have the correct logo and a
preview sometimes shows the front page - I receive a message stating the PP
can not read the file

If you're using Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, try disabling the
Office Plugin that comes with it. See

If you're using PowerPoint 2003, choose Help, Check for Updates. Apply all of
the suggested updates, then try opening your files again.

I have Norton 2005 but followed the instructions given by friend Garfield but
sadly this din't solve the problem. Thank you for trying
