While in Edit Mode, at the bottom of the screen is a text box with something
like "Slide 7 of 10". Usually, there is another text box that shows the
default name or properties of the slide. How do you change the information
in the text box on the right, or can you?

I believe the "second box" displays the template name. You can only change it
by changing or renaming template

In PPT 2002 or higher you can do View, Master, Slide Master
You'll see one or more masters or pairs of masters (Slide and Title master are
linked). Rightclick the one you want to change and choose Rename. Give it a
new name.

Change either of linked Title or Slide masters ... no need to change both.
