powerpoint background defaults

HELP!! I set up the ppt show for our lyrics every week at church. I use a
different background for each song, so I save each song independently, and
then import the slides into the main presentation. Sometimes - not always,
which is almost more frustrating - when I import, the background changes to
the default. How can I eliminate the default setting and let it import
whatever background I have saved in the song??? I have PPT 2000, if that
makes a difference.
