PowerPoint Animation - Grow/Shrink

Is there a way to grow and shrink an object from a fixed base position? I
could only make it grow/shrink from a center point. In my application I want
to freeze the position of the object baseline.

Try this:

Copy the shape. Make the copy no fill / no line, move it just below the
original and group the two shapes

Animate the grouped shape

Add a custom motion path animation to the object and set it to run "with
previous" (at the same time as the grow/shrink). Your object will start
"growing" at the existing center point but will end where you set your motion
path end point.
