PowerPoint 2007 - link to excel shows unavailable when reopening

We've just got the updated PowerPoint 2007 installed and I've found that the
excel links function does not appear to be working in the updated version.
It will work until you shut down and restart the next day. The link shows
unavailable and gives you an error. I have checked this out on the microsoft
office page and the workaround is to delete the link and reestablish the
link. This defeats the purpose of a link which is to automatically link the
excel data with PowerPoint. Has anyone else seen this? Is this a known bug
Microsoft is working to fix? Does anyone know of any better workarounds?

Yes, I've seen this, too.

I think it is a terrible slap in the face to its customers that Microsoft shipped PP2007 with this bug.
