Link Unavailable

When I link an excel 2007 spreadsheet (via special paste) in a powerpoint
2007 slide, I recieve the error as described on this Microsoft article ('Some
linked files were unavailable and can't be updated):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927284/en-us. ; Link unavialable when the
files are located on the network. If I move the files local, the problem
goes away. I downloaded and installed the hotfix the article mentions
(office-kb948943-fullfile-x86-glb.exe). This now allows me to succesfully
link source object (excel chart) into my presentation only when the chart and
presentation exist in the same network directory. I continue to recieve the
error messages if the files are in different network locations. Is there a
solution for dynamically linking network objects in powerpoint in various
network locations?

In a PowerPoint 2007 presentation, when you try to update the file location
of linked OLE objects that are hosted on a network or on an HTTP Web site,
you receive the following error message:

The linked file was unavailable and can’t be updated Alert ID 400272

Note To access the Links dialog box, click the Microsoft Office Button,
point to Prepare, and then click Edit Links to Files. The Edit Links to Files
option is available when the PowerPoint 2007 presentation contains links.

As soon as the excel sheet is special pasted in the slide, the link path
shows in the prepare menu.. yes. However, when the linked object exists in
a different network location that the pptx, the link becomes invalid whent he
pptx is saved and re-openned. Our only success has come when we restructure
the network directories so the linked objects are in the same directory as
the PPTX. Is there a work?

We are experiencing the same problems with PowerPoint 2007 and Excel 2007.
Did you find any better solution?

The Excel data files (multiple) that we are linked to (Paste
Special/Link/Excel) are in a different directory than the PowerPoint file.

The links "change" and become invalid each time you save and re-open the
PowerPoint... We can "fix" them in the Prepare/Links/Change Source - but
they don't stay fixed...

I tried Office Service Pack 1 (alreay installed) and the Hot Fix KB936982
(already installed). I don't have any COM Add-in's other than Adobe Acrobat
PDFMaker Office and Send to Bluetooth....
