Every time I copy a small piece of an Excel worksheet, it places the entire
workbook in my PowerPoint presentation. How do I just get the small
selection ?

Use Edit|Paste Special and paste a picture. Or try the other options and see
if anything else there gives you what you want.

A screen shot that is cropped to show just the cells that you need/want has
worked well for me in the past.

If you don't have anything else to edit pictures, an ALT+PrtScr key combo,
then a Paste to a blank Word doc to "edit" the screen shot works, then
copy/cut & past to your slide works too.

If you don't need to keep the data linked so it's editable as a spreadsheet,
paste it then ungroup it.

Juana, In additon to the other suggestions, if you want to keep the
data in the Excel range as real Excel data, in Excel from menu choose
Edit + Move or Copy Sheet and check Make Copy and put the target
positon as New workbook. Click OK and you will have a single sheet
workbook. Copy that range and you will only paste a single worksheet
workbook into PPT. Saves a heap of space.
