Power Surge on USB port

Greetings. I use an Acer laptop with 3 built-in USB ports, all of
which are USB 2.0. I will normally turn on my laptop without the AC
power plugged into it to begin with. After the laptop has been on for
about an hour or so, I'll plug in the AC power. At this point, I get a
ballon telling me that there has been a power surge on one of my USB
ports, though nothing is plugged into any of my USB ports. I open the
window, reset the port, and all is well the rest of the time. I only
use a USB 128mb flash-drive, nothing else, and even when I plug it in,
that balloon has never appeared. What can I do to get this to go away?

You want it to just go away? You are not concerned about the warning of
possible hardware damage? I think I would contact Acer about this if I were
in your position!

Sounds like the Laptops internal power supply regulation leaves a bit to be
desired.
(It may be getting ready to quit.) One of my daughters had a laptop that
started acting in a similar manner, then died with a fried internal power
supply.

I agree with Richard and Chuck, there is a possible problem with the
power supply and/or the charging/regulator circuit on the motherboard
and/or the battery and/or the USB circuits on the motherboard. Contact
Acer for tech support. This should not be happening.

The pop-up you are getting is a serious issue. Either the Power Supply or
the Motherboard has a bad regulator circuit, and this can destroy your
motherboard. You should bet it serviced immediately. This is *NOT*
something that can wait.

would have called Acer yesterday

You should always turn off your laptop computer before
pluging in the external power supply, to avoid permenent
irreverseable damage to laptop, battery, and power adapter.
Also never leave your laptop on for more than 8 hours at a
time to avoid permenent irreverseable damage to your
battery and harddrive.

Greetings. I have a follow-up from this problem. I went to Acer's
website and it explains that this error is nothing at all. In fact, it
gives instruction on how to prevent the error messages to ever appear.
Here's what it all says.

"Power Surge On Hub Port" error message in Windows XP SP2

Solution
Below are steps which are suggested by Microsoft for the Power Surge
message. Please note this is a false error and does not indicate a
hardware
problem with the USB ports.

1. For a short term solution, you can turn off the error message from
Device
Manager -> USB host controller -> Advanced tab -> check "Don't tell me
about
USB errors".

2. According to Microsoft, the error pop up does not disable its
function. It will
just turn off all error messages.

So anyway, I guess it's nothing to worry about, at least in this
instance. I think #2 on this list makes me concerned about turning off
ALL error messages, but like they say, "ignorance is bliss!" Thank you
again for your advice and suggestions.
