For the data, type "data recovery" into your Google search bar. There is
software out there that MIGHT work. If not, there are data recovery
companies that specialize in recovering data from fried drives.
Consider yourself lucky that all you lost was a Power Supply and a single
hard drive -- it just as easily could have been all of the hardware in the
box. [I have a friend who got a power surge that fried his PS so efficiently
that it set fire to his desk/office.]
Your first order of business should be to purchase good surge protection.
None of that cheap plastic junk that you can pick up for under ten bucks.
Choose a name brand such as APC (my choice), Belkin, TrippLite, Leviton.

Good g-d! Your post is almost impossible to read. If you are asking
about getting data back on the 200GB drive, then here are some
suggestions:

1. I'm not going to plow through your stream-of-consciousness post to
try and determine if you are computer-savvy or not. If you are, then
boot with Knoppix to try and get the data off OR

2. Use data recovery software to try and get the data off. Easy Recovery
Pro and R-Studio are good.

3. If you aren't skilled, take the drive to a professional computer
repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA) and have them
retrieve the data and show you how to back up.

4. If you don't have a competent computer repair shop in your area that
does data recovery, contact a professional data recovery firm. I prefer
DriveSavers (www.drivesavers.com) but there are others such as Ontrack
or Seagate Recovery. These firms' services are not inexpensive, but
only you can determine the value of your data.

Do you know what a sentence is? Do you know what a paragraph is? Do you know
why a space is left after a period at the end of a sentence? To make your
"prose" EASIER to READ!!

Try again please. Type something that is a bit less harsh on older eyes.

NEED-HELP-PLZ:
Since, as you say, your job is on the line we can all sympathize with your
desire to get this problem solved before too long. But in order to get
sensible responses that will help you do so, it's vital that you state your
problem clearly so that we have a reasonable understanding of just what the
problem is, how it occurred, and how it precisely affects the operation of
your computer.

I assume you have another computer at your disposal and that is how you're
able to post your message to this newsgroup, right?

I've taken the liberty of recasting your opening statement...

My computer is a Gateway 816GM desktop computer, with a AMD Athlon 64 3400+
processor, 2 MB of DDR memory, a Seagate 200 GB HDD (boot drive), and a
secondary Seagate 80 GB HDD which I use for storage. I also have a USB
external HD - a Seagate 160 GB which I use for backup purposes.
(NEED-HELP: Is the preceding description of your computer accurate?)

After a power surge... (NEED-HELP: Now, tell us precisely what happened.
Your primary boot drive didn't boot after this "power surge"? What was the
specific problem? Tell us exactly what happened when you first encountered
this problem.)

Assuming that *was* the problem...
After I took the machine to Circuit City for testing, they informed me my
power supply was defective and my ? drives were corrupted. With respect to
the hard drives, did they tell you that ALL your hard drives (at least the
two internal ones were "corrupted"?) or just the primary boot drive. And did
they say the drive(s) were still usable but only that the data was
"corrupted", or did they say the drive(s) were now defective and not
functional? And you external HD is excluded from this, right?

So you installed a new power supply. Now apparently you're able to boot to
your primary 200 GB HD. At least I think you are, but you can't access the
contents of that drive. Now, THIS IS IMPORTANT...

Tell us precisely what happens when you attempt to boot from the 200 GB HD.
Are you able to get to a Desktop? Do you get error messages, and if so, what
are they? Do you just get a black or blue screen and can't get any further?
Tell us in simple English exactly what the problem is.

Don't tell us about a problem with "DOS". Don't tell us about same vague
"DLL Error". Comments like "BUT as a slave it will read on com#2 but with no
partitions" are incomprehensible to us as is stuff like "repartitioned
it"3GB FAT32 an 7GB Active NTFS...". Just imagine you're explaining your
problem to someone who has very little knowledge of how a personal computer
works and you have to give him or her a clear understanding of what your
problem is and how it affects the operation of your computer.

Please, try to describe your problem as simply as you can. You *can* get
help here. Two of the responders to your query - Malke & Richard Urban - are
competent technicians and I'm sure they will use their considerable
expertise to help you if they can. But you *must* explain your problem in
clear & precise terms.

In the meantime, do you have available an XP installation CD that's
bootable? Or just the restore disks from Gateway?
