Power Supply

I have been using a "Raidmax RD-350W" power supply with a 20-pin connector to
the motherboard. When i bought a new power supply ("A1" brand) it had a
24-pin connector to the motherboard. Here are a few questions since I know
nothing about PSs.

1. Is there a designation (besides just manufacture preference) between 20
& 24-pin connectors to the motherboard (i.e. Pentium vs. AMD...I use AMD)?

2. Can I just buy a connector from the 24-pin connector from the PS to the
20-pin connector on my motherboard and not adversely affect my computer's
power?

I tried researching this a bit, but I couldn't find an actual answer for the
cdistinction between 20 & 24-pin conns. Any assistance with this would
greatly help my numbed-out brain, thanks.

Your answers!

1) There is no design difference betwee AMD and Intel, for power supply.
There is a newer standard that is being used for the newer "dual-core"
processors.

You may find that the extra four pins are in a separate plug, and can be
slid off to leave a 20 pin connector..

Power supplies are standard with 20-pin connector (and standard motherboards
as well.)

There is another power supply with a separate 4-pin connector and usually it
is called 12V ATX PS. It is used for motherboards that require extra power,
so to speak.

I have never seen yet a power supply with the 20 and the 4-pin connectors
together as one connector.

If these two connectors of your new "A1 PS" can be separated and your
motherboard does not require the 12V ATX connection, then just ignore the
extra 4-pin connector.

There are power supplies available now that, apart from having the 12 volt
four pin feed, also have a 20/24 pin convertible plug for use in regular ATX
and ATX Server mainboards.. in some cases, a converter is supplied, and in
others, the 'extra' four pins are removable..
