Hi all,

First the facts:
2 machines:

D945PSN mother board with an 840 dual core CPU, 2 gigs of ram,

PC #1
(2) 250 mb 16 mb cache SATA
(2) 250 mb 16 mb cache PATA
with All-in-wonder (256mb) in PCI express slot.
DVD burner

PC #2
(2) 250 mb 16 mb cache SATA
with GForce 6600 in PCI express slot.
More drives to be added later
DVD burner

Questions:
Is Antec a good brand? Is 400 watts each, enough?

Regards,

Antec is the Best brand. I have successfully used them exclusively for many
years without regret. And 400 watts sounds fine.

I'd recommend the Antec TruePower 430W. It has "low noise technology"
where the fans rotate at slower RPM's when the system is cool and extra
cooling not required.

The two special connectors on the Antec supply enable the power
supply's variable RPM technology to also control the case fans. This
helps to reduce the overall noise of the entire case, and not just the
power supply itself.

The TruePower 430 is a pretty good unit for noise conscious systems -
it has a very comprehensive assortment of power connectors for both
motherboards and peripherals.

Thanks guys, very usefull advice, I'm going with a Antec 500 I saw on
sale. I don't need 500 watts but I'm so tired of fixing marginal OS
etc., that I think it's time for overkill and paranoia.

Also, something I found in another group that may be usefull:

"Antec is one of the best brands you can buy when it comes to power
supplies. In answer to your second question, here's a link to a
computer power supply calculator.

Not really best", but at least a bit above average.
Zippy Emacs, Fortron Sparkle, Delta, PC Power & Cooling, and
random other specific models from other brands are better
quality, some at same but others higher price-points.

For the best quality, choose the higher-end lines from the
major PSU manufacturers... Antec only relabels, does not
manufacturer them. That doesn't mean they're crap at all,
but to put it another way, there's less difference between a
400W and 500W Antec than between a 500W Antec and 500W PC
Power & Cooling.

What???

Neither Best nor Antec have ever had anyting to do with one another,
and I'm including not only the current Channel Wells but also the old
Antec PP- series made by HEC. What proof do you have that Antec is a
Best brand?

Antec's very good, 400W is enough, but FSP (Fortron Source Power) is at
least as good, maybe even better, and usually cheaper - check
Newegg.com, where you can get a 400W for under $50 (choose the big fan
model). You don't need anything as expensive as PC Power & Cooling.

Hell, why not bite the bullet and get PC Power & Coolings new
1000 watt unit?

Because it's seldom 'extremes' that're necessary. I mean,
all too often (though fortunately, less often in this
newsgroup that some web forums) when someone posts about
poor power, everyone tends to go overboard and suggest $100+
PSU when the system merely needed the appropriate output
capacity in an acceptible quality level, which for a "PC"
that has anything but a dozen HDDs or high-end SLI'd video
cards, can usually be found for under $70.

Not that there's anything wrong with a PCP&C, but if a box
needs anywhere near that much power, it'll need industrial
strength cooling too, a larger server-style chassis and
suddenly system is no longer constrained to such a high
energy density, small PS2 form-factor power supply.
