I just installed win xp on one of my older computers. it was running
win98se. With win98, at shut down, the entire computer would turn off.
with winxp, i get a splash screen that says i can now turn off my computer.
why would win98 be able to completely turn off the computer but winxp won't?
I also have to hold the power button in for a few moments before the fan
turns off.

is there a setting in xp that tells the computer to power off completely??

thanks again to all....

Hi,

You likely need to enable APM on the older system. Check Power Options in
the Control Panel. APM is not enabled by default during installation.
