Power schemes were deleted please help me

I'm running WinXP pro and have lost all the reguler power schemes from the
power options propreties window. Also I'm unable to Save a new scheme.
My son was trying to add a new power scheme, the schemes where deleted from
the power properties window by right clicking and selecting delete.
Unknown is listed above Turn off monitor-Turn off hard disks-System
standby-System hibernates.
They are still listed in the registry but with no value set.
How do I go about getting the schemes back?

Have you tried doing a System Restore to some previous restore point?

1) open notepad.exe to a new document, and ensure format | word wrap is

2) cut the text between the marks above, and paste into notepad.

3) VERIFY that each of the "description=" strings is on a single (long)
line; you'll need to use backspace to piece these long line back
together, since posting here forced wordwrap. check other lines too, the
"hex" lines should end w/ a backslash (no backslash in middle of a line),
if not fix them up too. [backslash is the "continues on next line" signal
character for these long hex lines].

4) once you've reviewed the file and are confidant it's good, save it as
POW.REG (the .reg part is important, any name will do).

5) right-click the .reg file and choose MERGE. click ok twice to make the
change. you're reg should now be fixed. go into control panel | power

note this fixes the reg for the current user only; if you have another

you are set up for the english language.

good luck.

SWEET!!!! Thanks a ton man! My schemes are back and working again. As
far as pasting into Notepad and fixing the descriptions, the hex info did
have to be fixed also, but not because there were backslashes in the middle
of lines. They ended up looking like they were double spaced but the blank
line in between the hex text lines actually had two spaces inserted into it
that had to be removed also. Just FYI.

Thanks again!!!!!!

If the problem is seen only in the current user profile, try this:

Logon to another user profile, and open Registry Editor
Navigate to this location:
[HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg]
Export the key to a REG file.
Close Registry Editor and logoff

Now, logon to the 'subject' profile, and then merge the REG file that you've exported already.

I only have the administrator profile but with my name instead of
"Administrator" (not including the Safe Mode administrator profile). I
just never figured out what made them disappear in the first place. One
day they're working fine, the next, no longer there. But the reg keys
fixed it all up!! :)

God bless you !!!
What causes this problem to happen?
I've been going NUTS with it.

I have seen this happen before, the only fix is to edit the registry back
to the default values. Here they are, directions at end:

directions:

1) open notepad.exe to a new document, and ensure format | word wrap is
NOT checked

2) cut the text between the marks above, and paste into notepad.

3) VERIFY that each of the "description=" strings is on a single (long)
line; you'll need to use backspace to piece these long line back
together, since posting here forced wordwrap. check other lines too, the
"hex" lines should end w/ a backslash (no backslash in middle of a line),
if not fix them up too. [backslash is the "continues on next line" signal
character for these long hex lines].

4) once you've reviewed the file and are confidant it's good, save it as
POW.REG (the .reg part is important, any name will do).

5) right-click the .reg file and choose MERGE. click ok twice to make the
change. you're reg should now be fixed. go into control panel | power
and verify.

note this fixes the reg for the current user only; if you have another
account that has the same issue log into it and repeat. also, it assumes
you are set up for the english language.

good luck.

Dear Frodo,

I sweated over the same problem for several weeks; your simple solution was
a godsend. Thanks a million.
